Protecting Your Precious Attention explores one of the most important—and overlooked—skills of modern life: learning to consciously direct our attention. In an age of endless notifications, persuasive algorithms, and constant distraction, students discover that attention is the foundation of learning, creativity, meaningful relationships, and purposeful action. Rather than treating distraction as a personal failure, we investigate the forces competing for our attention and learn how to engage them with greater awareness and intention.
Students explore:
- How the modern attention economy shapes our thoughts, habits, and choices
- Why attention is the foundation of learning, creativity, and personal growth
- Practical strategies for strengthening attention and reducing distraction
- How to develop a healthier, more intentional relationship with technology
Throughout the course, students become investigators of their own experience. Through conversations, experiments, reflective practices, and a two-day digital fast, we explore what strengthens our attention, what fragments it, and how different environments, habits, and technologies influence our ability to live intentionally. Together, we build a compassionate learning environment where successes and struggles alike become opportunities for discovery rather than judgment.
By the end of the course, students possess a deeper understanding of their own habits and a practical toolkit for navigating an increasingly distracting world. Rather than feeling controlled by technology, they develop the confidence to make intentional choices about where their attention goes—and, ultimately, what kind of life they want to create.
A Deeper Dive
Every generation inherits its own defining challenge. For young people today, one of the greatest is learning how to preserve the capacity for sustained attention in a world designed to capture it. Never before have billions of dollars, sophisticated algorithms, and vast teams of behavioral scientists been devoted to understanding how to attract, capture, and control human attention. Social media platforms, streaming services, games, and digital advertising compete continuously for one of our most finite and valuable capacities: the ability to choose what we attend to.
This course begins by examining the architecture of the attention economy. Students learn why attention has become one of the world’s most valuable resources, how digital platforms are designed to influence behavior, and why even highly intelligent and disciplined people find themselves caught in cycles of scrolling, binge-watching, and endless distraction. Rather than blaming individuals, we seek to understand the larger systems within which these experiences arise.
From there, the course becomes deeply personal and practical. Students begin observing their own patterns with curiosity rather than self-criticism. What situations make focused attention easier? What conditions make distraction almost inevitable? How do sleep, exercise, stress, relationships, or the physical environment shape the quality of attention? Through a series of experiments—including a two-day digital fast—students discover that different practices affect different people in different ways. Instead of prescribing universal solutions, the course invites each student to become a careful student of their own mind.
Ultimately, this course is about much more than screen time. It is about reclaiming the capacity to direct one’s own life. Wherever our attention goes, our lives gradually follow. By learning to notice where their attention is being pulled, strengthening their ability to choose where it rests, and developing practical habits that support sustained focus, students leave with one of the most valuable capacities they can cultivate in an age of distraction: the ability to decide what is worthy of their attention.
